Child and Family Psychology

"Effective and sustainable solutions to concerns"

At STEPS Child and Family Psychology we seek to find effective and sustainable solutions to concerns. We keep possibilities open, we work respectfully and collaboratively and we often keep in touch long after our involvement.

STEPS Child and Family Psychology is a partnership of two Psychologists, Ruth and Tony Waterhouse.  We are dedicated to delivering an individual, high quality, professional service. We are all registered with the Health and Care Professions Council, with the Association of Educational Psychologists; and all have been awarded Chartered Psychologist status by the British Psychological Society. Both of us have enhanced CRB certificates.

Both are willing to travel extensively in response to a wide range of parental and institutional concerns.

Ruth Waterhouse child and family psychologist

Ruth Waterhouse BA (Hons), PGCE, MSc, Chartered Psychologist, has over three decades of experience of working as a Psychologist. Ruth worked as an Educational Psychologist in two north eastern Educational Psychology Services for eighteen years before founding STEPS Child and Family Psychology in 2000. Whilst Ruth developed a number of specialisms in her Local Authority work her overriding interest was to provide a service to parents as well as to schools, strenuously encouraging the development of collaborative and honest working with the child’s needs at the centre.

Ruth was appointed as the first ever Consultant to the Newcastle Dyslexia Institute (now Dyslexia Action) in 1983. Ruth went on to develop specialisms in hearing impairment, challenging behaviour and individual and family therapy in her Local Authority work. Since working independently Ruth has further developed her interest and skills in therapeutic work enabling children to gain in confidence, to form friendships, to return to school after long periods of school refusal and to achieve potential. In addition to her work with STEPS Child and Family Psychology Ruth works as an Expert Witness for Courts in the fields of Family Law and Medical Negligence.

Tony Waterhouse chartered psychologist at STEPS Hexham

Tony Waterhouse BSc (Hons), BA (Hons) MSc, Chartered Psychologist, joined STEPS Child and Family Psychology in 2011. Before qualifying as an Educational Psychologist Tony worked as an Ergonomist and he therefore brings a valuable practical problem solving approach to all his work, attending meticulously to detail ensuring that a child’s physical environment is matched to need. Tony works in a similar manner to Ruth and he specialises in assessment of children, young people and students who have specific difficulties which may require Access Arrangements or a diagnosis of a Learning Disability such that specific physical, sensory and/or learning difficulties are taken into account and appropriately provided for.

Yvonne Collingwood rejoined STEPS Child and Family Psychology in February 2018, and acts as a Personal Assistant to both Ruth and Tony.

Yvonne will often be your first point of contact and she will usually be here to greet you on arrival.
